History & architecture
The Davenport House was completed in 1820 by Isaiah Davenport, a master carpenter and master builder who emigrated from Rhode Island to Savannah and became one of the city's most influential early-19th-century craftsmen. The Federal-style brick mansion sits on Columbia Square — one of the original 22 historic squares laid out under James Oglethorpe's 1733 plan for Savannah — and showcases the proportions, plaster ceiling medallions, and refined masonry that defined the Federal period in the American South. By the mid-20th century the house had fallen into disrepair and was scheduled for demolition in 1955 to make way for a parking lot. Seven Savannah women organized to buy and save the building, and in doing so founded the Historic Savannah Foundation — the organization that catalyzed the first major historic preservation movement in the country and went on to rescue more than 350 buildings across the Landmark District.
